SRINAGAR —

The Election Commission of India has announced a three-phase schedule for Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, the first to be held since the state was divided into two union territories in 2019 and subsequently granted statehood restoration under a Supreme Court timeline.

Voting will be held across 90 assembly constituencies between September 15 and October 1, with results announced on October 4. The election involves over eight million registered voters, including approximately 2.5 million new voters who will be casting ballots for the first time.

The announcement comes after months of political maneuvering among the National Conference, the Peoples Democratic Party, the BJP, and the Congress — all of whom have filed manifestos positioning their approach to developmental priorities, land rights, and the restoration of statehood's full constitutional provisions.

Security arrangements will be the most extensive in the state's electoral history, with the Election Commission requesting central armed police forces deployment across all phases. Recent infiltration attempts in the Pir Panjal range have added urgency to security planning.
