India Secures Observer Partnership with G7 on Digital Trade Norms
India will participate in G7 working groups on cross-border data flows and AI standards, a role that stops short of membership but signals rising influence.
India has been granted observer status in G7 working groups on digital trade standards and artificial intelligence governance, a development Indian officials described as recognition of the country's growing role in shaping the global digital economy.
The partnership allows Indian technical officials to participate in drafting sessions for cross-border data flow frameworks and AI safety protocols — areas where India has historically been a rule-taker rather than a rule-maker in international forums.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who represented India at the ministerial meeting that finalised the arrangement, said the role gives India an opportunity to "ensure that digital trade rules serve the interests of the Global South, not just the technologically advanced economies."
The arrangement is politically sensitive. India has resisted several G7 positions on data localisation, content moderation, and digital services taxation — tensions that observer status does not resolve but may help manage through early engagement rather than post-facto objection.
