India's Electric Vehicle Production Crosses 3 Million Units in Six Months
Driven by two-wheelers and a surge in domestic battery manufacturing capacity, India is on track to become the world's third-largest EV market by volume.
India produced over 3 million electric vehicles in the first six months of 2026, nearly matching total EV production for the entire calendar year 2024 and putting the country on track to surpass Japan as the world's third-largest EV market by volume before year-end.
The milestone is driven overwhelmingly by electric two-wheelers, which account for 2.4 million units — led by Ola Electric, Hero MotoCorp's Vida brand, and TVS Motor. Electric four-wheelers, at approximately 380,000 units, are growing more slowly but accelerating as Tata Motors' Nexon EV and new entrants from MG Motor and Hyundai fill mid-market price points.
The production surge has been enabled by a domestic battery cell manufacturing capacity that barely existed three years ago. The Production-Linked Incentive scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells has catalysed ₹28,000 crore in investment across facilities in Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Gujarat.
Despite the production milestone, EVs represent only 8.4 per cent of total vehicle sales — underscoring the scale of the transition yet ahead. Infrastructure remains the primary constraint: India has approximately 18,000 public charging points against an estimated 200,000 needed to alleviate range anxiety for four-wheeler buyers.
