NEW DELHI —

The Ayushman Bharat Health Account programme has enrolled its 800 millionth citizen, the National Health Authority confirmed, achieving in four years a scale of digital health identity that no country has matched in a comparable timeframe.

The ABHA platform stores a longitudinal health record for each registered citizen — vaccination history, diagnostic test results, hospital discharge summaries, prescription records, and organ donation status — accessible to authorised healthcare providers through a consent framework that requires active patient approval for each data access event.

The impact on healthcare delivery has been most visible in secondary and tertiary hospitals that previously managed patients without prior medical history. Doctors report that ABHA integration reduces the time spent on patient history taking by an average of 18 minutes per consultation and lowers unnecessary repeat diagnostics by approximately 23 per cent.

The system's potential is most fully realised in emergency settings: 47,000 ABHA-integrated emergency rooms can now access a patient's blood group, allergy records, and current medications within seconds of admission using biometric identification.
