India Wins Three Esports Medals at Asian Games 2026, Colombo
India's national esports team claims gold in BGMI Mobile, silver in Street Fighter VI, and bronze in FIFA 26 — a breakthrough for India in competitive gaming.
India's national esports contingent has won three medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Colombo — gold in Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), silver in Street Fighter VI, and bronze in FIFA 26 — marking the country's best performance in competitive gaming at a multi-sports Asian event.
The BGMI gold was delivered by a squad of five players aged 19-23, who defeated the South Korean team in a dramatic final watched by an estimated 85 million viewers on streaming platforms globally — the most-watched Indian esports performance in history.
Animesh Agarwal, captain of the BGMI team, attributed the victory to India's 350-million strong mobile gaming community that provides an unrivalled competitive pool: "When 350 million people play a game, the very best among them are going to be extraordinarily good. We are a product of that ecosystem."
The Gaming Federation of India has applied for formal recognition from the Indian Olympic Association and has requested inclusion of esports in the 2036 Olympics being hosted by India — an application that would be considered alongside the IOC's evolving position on competitive gaming as an Olympic discipline.
