India Wins Chess Olympiad Gold in Both Open and Women's Sections
In a historic achievement, India claimed the overall championship trophy at Budapest's 46th Chess Olympiad, with D. Gukesh and R. Vaishali leading their respective teams.
India achieved an unprecedented double at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, winning gold medals in both the Open and Women's sections to claim the overall championship by the largest aggregate score margin in the event's modern history.
The Open section victory was led by World Champion D. Gukesh, who scored 9.5 points from 11 games on Board 1, while Praggnanandhaa on Board 2 and Arjun Erigaisi on Board 3 provided complementary performances that left no opposing team able to sustain a challenge through the final rounds.
The Women's section victory was equally comprehensive: R. Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, and Tania Sachdev played with a consistency that overwhelmed stronger individual opponents from China and Ukraine. Divya Deshmukh's Board 3 score of 8.5/10 was the highest among top-board female players in the tournament.
Prime Minister Modi and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya offered personal congratulations, describing the result as "a moment that will define Indian chess for a generation." The All India Chess Federation has proposed a ₹50 crore comprehensive development plan to build on the depth of talent the Olympiad results have showcased.
